How to calculate GPA
GPA is the average of your grade points, weighted by credit hours. For each course, multiply the grade points by the credits to get quality points. Add up all quality points, then divide by the total credits.
GPA = total quality points / total credits
Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course gives 12 quality points. A B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives 12. Total is 24 quality points over 7 credits, so the GPA is 24 / 7 = 3.43.
Grade point scale used
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A- | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C- | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ / D / D- | 1.3 / 1.0 / 0.7 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA treats every course the same on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes. This calculator adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP, IB or college-level courses (only when the grade is above F). Schools differ, so check your school's policy if you need an exact figure.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my high school GPA?
Enter each course with its letter grade and credit value (many high schools use 1 credit per year-long class). Mark Honors or AP classes to see your weighted GPA as well.
How do I find my cumulative GPA?
Fill in your previous GPA and the credits you have already completed, then add this term's courses. The tool combines both into one cumulative GPA.
Is an A+ worth more than an A?
On most 4.0 scales both count as 4.0. Some schools use 4.3 for an A+, so confirm with your school.
